AWARDS AND FELLOWSHIPS
11. IRANIAN JOURNALIST AWARDED GOLDEN PEN OF FREEDOM
The World Association of Newspapers (WAN) has awarded the 2006 Golden Pen of Freedom prize to jailed Iranian journalist Akbar Ganji and called for his immediate release. Ganji is serving the fourth year of a six-year sentence and has reportedly been tortured.
The Golden Pen award, which will be presented on 5 June 2006 at the World Newspaper Congress and World Editors Forum in Moscow, Russia, recognises Ganji's "outstanding defence and promotion of press freedom."
Ganji was arrested in April 2000 following his participation in a Berlin conference which discussed political and social reform in Iran. He was sentenced to six years in prison in 2001 for "insulting religious edicts and figures, threatening national security and dissemination of propaganda against the Islamic system." Ganji is the author of the book "Dungeon of Ghosts," which implicates former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and other leading conservative figures in the murders of five writers and intel
lectuals in 1998.
Ganji has gone on two long hunger strikes during his prison term, including a two-month stint that ended in early September. He was discharged from hospital and moved to the notorious Evin prison, where he is being kept in solitary confinement.
Previous winners of the Golden Pen of Freedom award include Argentine journalist Jacobo Timerman, Zimbabwean journalist Geoffrey Nyarota and Sudanese editor Mahjoub Mohamed Salih.
