Nobel Committee Concerned by Continued Threats Against Narges Mohammadi July 10, 20
Iran Emrooz :
The Norwegian Nobel Committee is deeply concerned and distressed by reports of serious
threats against Narges Mohammadi, the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
Ms. Mohammadi received the prize for her fight against the oppression of women
in Iran and for her efforts to promote human rights and freedom for all.
In an urgent phone call with Jürgen Vatne Fridens, the chairman of the Norwegian
Nobel Committee, Ms. Mohammadi announced that she had received warnings —
both through her lawyers and through indirect channels.
The clear message, she said, is that: “I have recently received continuous,
direct and indirect threats that indicate that I may face extralegal actions
and death threats from government-affiliated agents.”
The threats conveyed to Ms. Mohammadi clearly indicate that her safety is at serious
risk unless she commits to cease all public activities inside Iran, as well as any
activism or international media presence in support of democracy, human rights, and
freedom of expression.
“The Norwegian Nobel Committee is deeply concerned about the threats against Narges
Mohammadi and all Iranian citizens with critical voices in general, and calls on the
authorities not only to protect their lives, but also to guarantee their freedom of
expression,” said Jürgen Vatne Fridens, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
