Sotoudeh – Panahi: European Parliament Takes a Stand

Monday, 03 December 2012 16:35

Stop Fundamentalism – Pictures of jailed Iranian human rights lawyer, Nasrin Sotoudeh and Iranian famous filmmaker Jafar Panahi decorate European Parliament's main entrance, as a gesture of support for the two Iranian dissidents who have won this years Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought.

Nasrin Sotoudeh, 49, an Iranian woman lawyer is currently on her seventh week of hunger strike in Iranian Evin prison to protest mistreatment of women political prisoners in Iran and also mistreatment of her husband and daughter.

Sotoudeh's husband along with their 12-year-old daughter have been banned from leaving the country.
Sotoudeh continues an unlimited hunger strike and her husband reports that she has become quite weak and her life could be in danger.
Sotoudeh and Panahi, both have received six years prison terms for campaigning against the security interests of Iran.  Their cases are not related.  Also, while they both have been banned from leaving the country, the European Parliament insists on having them present at the 2012 Sakharov prize award ceremony held on December 26 during the European Parliament's plenary session in Strasbourg.
There are no indications showing that any of the two will be able to attend the award ceremony.
Meanwhile Nasrin Sotoudeh's health remains the subject of great concern for international observers as she continues on her hunger strike.
