By: Akbar Ganji Special to CNN
The Road to Democracy in IranAkbar Ganji
Foreword by Joshua Cohen and Abbas Milani
Akbar Ganji, called by some "Iran's most famous dissident," was a commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. But, troubled by the regime's repressive nature, he became an investigative journalist in the 1990s, writing for Iran's pro-democracy newspapers. Most notably, he traced the murders of dissident intellectuals to Iran's secret service. In 2000 Ganji was arrested, sentenced to six years in prison, and banned from working as a journalist. His eighty-day hunger strike during his last year in prison mobilized the international human rights community. The Road to Democracy in Iran, Ganji's first book in English, demonstrates his lifelong commitment to human rights and democracy. A passionate call for universal human rights and the right to democracy from a Muslim perspective, it lays out the goals and means of Iran's democracy movement, why women's rights trump some interpretations of Islamic law, and how the West can help promote democracy in Iran (he strongly opposes U.S. intervention) and other Islamic countries.Throughout the book Ganji argues consistently for universal rights based on our common humanity (and he believes the world's religions support that idea). But his arguments never veer into abstraction; they are rooted deeply in the realities of life in Islamic countries, and offer a clear picture of the possibilities for and obstacles to improving human rights and promoting democracy in the Muslim world.About the AuthorAkbar Ganji, called by some "Iran's most famous dissident," was a member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Since his release from prison in March 2006, he has been traveling outside Iran, meeting with intellectuals and activists in the international human rights community. He is currently living in the United States.

CNN) -- This week leaders will gather in New York for the annual meeting of the U.N. General Assembly. While Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will be among them, Iranians reject his claim to leadership. They strongly oppose any meeting or recognition of Ahmadinejad, especially by President Obama.
The pro-democracy movement in Iran today unanimously believes that he enjoys his current position because he was "reappointed" president after stealing several million votes in June 12 presidential election.
Popular protests against this state of affairs have been met with bullets from the Iranian regime. Thousands were arrested and dozens were killed. Opposition supporters have been tortured in jail and credible reports of rape have surfaced.
In recent years the Western media has not focused on the systematic human rights violations in Iran but rather on Iran's nuclear ambitions and Ahmadinejad's rhetoric toward Israel and the Nazi Holocaust. Iranians are deeply upset by the general inattentiveness of the media and world leaders to their political protests.
If you listen to the democratic voices of Iranians and leaders of Iran's Green Movement there is a unanimous view that Ahmadinejad's policies have severely undermined Iranian national interests and he has inadvertently better served the interests of Israel.
Although the regime has been able to reassert control due to severe repression recent events have led to important social transformations in Iran. Today there are many prominent names publicly opposing the Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. Many open letters have been circulated that for the first time directly criticize him. U.S. policy under Obama has also played a constructive role. The absence of military threats and new economic sanctions has given democracy activists more room to maneuver, posing new challenges to the regime.
In order to deal with this internal crisis Khamenei's only option is to shift attention to Iran's relationship with the outside world -- the United States in particular. By increasing verbal attacks on the West and exacerbating regional conflicts he hopes to draw the attention of both Iranians and the world away from the systematic violations of human rights in Iran.
Iran's nuclear ambitions should not be considered the primary weak point for the regime. To a limited extent Khamenei and his disciples can manipulate the nationalist sentiment of Iranians around this issue.
The Achilles heel for the regime today is the widespread and systematic violations of human rights against it own people. Greater exposure and scrutiny of this key issue will generate more popular discontent toward the leaders of Iran. Khamenei cannot maintain regime loyalty or acquiescence in the face of these massive human rights violations. It is precisely these organized repressive measures that the International Criminal Court, in other contexts, has called "crimes against humanity."
Although Iran, like the United States and Israel, are not members of the ICC, charges can be brought against the Iranian regime via the U.N. Security Council -- similar to the process that led to the arrest warrant for Omar Al Bashir, the leader of Sudan. We in the Iranian human rights movement can document, with certification from a team of international lawyers, that leaders of the Iranian regime are guilty of crimes against humanity under Article 7 of the Rome Statute that established the ICC.
Today, the people of Iran are in need of the moral and spiritual support from people around the world. In the current circumstances the most important form of support would be to assist with the campaign of charging the leaders of Iran with "crimes against humanity" and to help disseminate this initiative so that it becomes the main avenue of engagement with Iran by the international community.
We are seeking to place this issue at the top of the international agenda so that leaders of the Iranian regime will think twice before traveling abroad as well as to make it morally unacceptable for leaders of democratic countries to extend a hand to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Tomorrow is the day.Based on the news a huge rally is planed,Karoubi,Musavi,Khatami and Rafsanji are planning to attened!

Qodes Day, will it become a huge human rights day for Iranian? This week again Iranian all over the world will rally in support and solidarity with their countrymen and women and will let them know they havn't forgot them and will informe the public in each country about the events in Iran. The regime of coup d'etat and khamenei are puzzeled with continued unrest in Iran. Economy is in shamble , more and more clergies are leaving the camp of Khamenei-Ahmadinejad's . School and Universities are going to open next week which will bring more young Iranian into the big city's to attend schools.
Many grand Ayatollahs have broken their tie with regime and Khamenei and have joined the camp of reformists and they have no respect for Khamenei and one of the Ayatollah from Shiraz called Khamenei as " traitor". In Kurdistan province because of regime's policy of violence, underground groups have assassinated so far two judges and one grand Ayatollah member of the "Assembly of Expert" . Unfortunately violence will bring violence and regime is to be blamed for pouring oil on the fire instead of hearing the cry of Iranian for freedom and backing off .
Tomorrow is the day, Karoubi, Musavi, Khatami , Rafsanjani and many more are joining the rally. Last night all over Tehran witnessed once again the cry of " Alah o Akbar" on the roof tops.
In Canada , cyclists are planning to move from Toronto to New York to join the rally beside UN headquarter with thousands of other Iranian from around the world and it has come to my attention that on Saturday several Iranian political group have planned protest in solidarity with Iranian people in Toronto.
Report from Iran indicate that , Ahmadinejad will be the first to speak to the United Nation.
Iranian people repeatedly asked the heads of states to leave the meeting when Ahmadinejad is going to speak because he is not the legitimate representative of Iranian.

I'm worried about my country.

My life is in danger, says the man ! The story goes on but the film stops ( or perhaps censored )!

In the last post , you have seen a film , a man who says he has served 28 years in "Sepah" ( the Revolutionary Guards) and has served in the war between Iran -Iraq and 40% of his body was wounded, he says ; his son was killed by a Basiji Militia and Sepah is supporting the Basiji, Sepah is supporting the murderer, and he says because of him being outspoken his life has been threatened and he has no life security, he says; if he is dead , then he shows the man with military uniform ( Mr. Araghi ) will be responsible, because of security he found beside a clergyman and all other people he talks ....
The man in the uniform ( Mr. Araghi) tells him to go make consent and then he says ; you are not a man , go make any complaint you want......
The man says; if it was your son would you make consent with murderer , you are not a man , i was a man to speak about this .....
The talk goes on... until the revolutionary Guard became agitated and loose control and slaps the man.

The story goes on..but the film stops!

This picture shows Iranian paper money and on these money the Iranian have written slogans which reads:

Iranian youth takes every opportunity to fight back against the regime. Here they made the money into a newspaper.

September 18 is the Qodes Day ( for palestinian cause ) according to the calendar of the islamic republic and usually a pro-government rally is organized by the government but this time all Iranian opposed to regime and the government of Ahmadinejad are preparing themselves to participate in the rally and make this rally an anti-coup d'etat regime rally. Because of this, regime is afraid and Khamenei in the last Friday prayer thretened the opposition leaders not to divide the people on that day and if do so ,they would face persecution .

The coup d'etat regime for fear from people's revolt, moving slowly preparing cases against high ranking reformists !

Karoubi one of the last June presidential candidate and a protest leader who believe that the presidential election was a fraudulant election and Ahmadinejad is a cheater and lier, in the recent weeks revealed about horrendous crimes which was happening in detention centre such as "Kahrizak" . Crimes against humanity like interrogation, torture, rape of young girles and boys and in some cases people were even burnt to death to destroy the evidence.

This were the heated subjects between Karoubi, Musavi and the regime officials. The subject also became the concern of MP's in parliament for investigation. By looking into the last months newspapers and online website articles shows enough of this heated discussion among high ranking regime officials , Ayatollahs and among the Iranian society.

The stage was such that; Mr. Karoubi was speaking on this issues and sometimes meeting with regime officials and was showing evidence and all the regime officials were denying the allegation and were rejecting Mr. Karoubi's comments and evidence.

But hear what happened then:
Around 3:00 oclock agents with the searching warrant from newly appointed prosecutor raided the office of Mr. Karoubi at "Jamshidieh-Tehran" while searching his office took away with them all the documents, CD's , film and computer and closed and sealed his office." , said Etemad Melli party spoksperson speaking with ILNA.

Now Mr. Bahonar a conservative MP and a supporter of Ahmadinejad and also deputy of house speaker says that ; if Mr. Karoubi won't be able to strongly prove his allegation , he has commited a big crime and he must respond to that.

Now , how can Mr. Karoubi prove that he is telling the truth when the agents have raided his office and took away all the document? You moron MP! Instead of questioning the raided agents and prosecutor you are demanding Mr. Karoubi to show his evidence? you are as guilty and lier as Ahmadinejd.

ARTICLE 19 urges Human Rights Council to address free expression in Iran!

REPORT - IRAN 8 September 2009
ARTICLE 19 urges Human Rights Council to address free expression
ARTICLE 19 has provided a Submissionto the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) raising serious concerns about thefailure of the Islamic Republic of Iran to respect and promote freedom ofexpression in that country.
This Submission, which comes as the HRCprepares its Universal Periodic Review of Iran, focuses on the IranianGovernment's failure to fulfill its international obligations to protectthe right to freedom of expression. In particular, ARTICLE 19 examines a number of restrictions on freedom ofexpression contained in the Iranian Constitution, as well as the highlyrestrictive regulation of print media that represents a serious incursionon the structural freedom of the press and its independence from politicalinfluence. ARTICLE 19 is particularly concerned about the extensive contentrestrictions on print media. This includes a lack of objective criteria andclear definitions in the Press Law, which also sets out licensingobligations for all individuals and organisations operating in the presssector, and excessively harsh penalties, including incarceration, floggingand suspension/banning of media outlets, for violations of the Press Law.It also notes that there are a number of problematic administrative andjudicial practices which further heighten the repressive impact of thelegislative provisions, including the inappropriate use of theRevolutionary Court and the issuing of written orders by the Executiveconcerning what material can be discussed in the print media. Furthermore, the submission criticises the Government's control overtelevision and radio broadcasting, and a lack of independent publicservices broadcasting. ARTICLE 19 also raises serious concerns about thenumerous cases of arbitrary arrest and harassment of journalists, bloggersand writers, and outlines instances of internet censorship in Iran. ARTICLE 19 deplores the severe violations of press freedom and freedom ofexpression in Iran and urges the HRC to address them during the review.
