Iranian lawyer's jailing 'unjustifiable' : Canada

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon has condemned
as "completely unacceptable and unjustifiable" a jail sentence handed to a prominent human rights lawyer in Iran. Nasrin Sotoudeh, 45, who was jailed in September for talking to foreign media, was sentenced to 11 years in jail and banned for 20 years from working as an attorney and leaving the country. OTTAWA (AFP) – Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon on Tuesday condemned as "completely unacceptable and unjustifiable" a jail sentence handed to a prominent human rights lawyer in Iran.
Nasrin Sotoudeh, 45, who was jailed in September for talking to foreign media, was sentenced to 11 years in jail and banned for 20 years from working as an attorney and leaving the country, her husband told AFP.
"We are deeply concerned," Cannon said in a statement. "Such a sentence is completely unacceptable and unjustifiable."
"We once again urge the government of Iran to reverse the deterioration of human rights in its country," he added.
Sotoudeh, the mother of two, represented Nobel Laureate and lawyer Shirin Ebadi and her family as well as Issa Saharkhiz, a journalist and aide to opposition leader Mehdi Karroubi, and Heshmat Tabarzadi, a vocal secular democracy activist.
She was also the lawyer of Arash Rahmani-Pour, a 20-year-old man who was executed in January 2010 along with another man for membership in a monarchist group and for being a "mohareb," or an enemy of God.
Sotoudeh complained that she had been prevented from attending his trial and that she had learned about the execution after it was carried out.

The National Lawyers Guild expresses its support and solidarity with Iran’s human rights defenders who have been prosecuted and/or arrested due to their human rights activities. The National Lawyers Guild is especially concerned for the well being of Nasrin Sotoudeh, a colleague of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Shirin Ebadi, whose health is quickly deteriorating from three separate hunger strikes undertaken to protest her lack of due process.
The National Lawyers Guild also urges the release of human rights lawyer, Mohammad Oliyafar who suffers from leukemia and was sentenced to one year prison for publicizing the case of his clients. The National Lawyers Guild condemns the systematic persecution of the founders and members of the Defenders of Human Rights Center, including the nine-year prison sentence dealt to Mohammad Seifzadeh, co-founder of the DHRC, and Mohammad Ali Dadkhah and Abdolfattah Soltani for establishing DHRC.
We call upon the Islamic Republic of Iran to adhere to the standards set-forth by the UN Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers, which states that lawyers must be allowed to carry out their work “without intimidation, hindrance, harassment or improper interference.” It also recognizes that lawyers are entitled to freedom of expression, including “the right to take part in public discussion of matters concerning the law, the administration of justice and the promotion and protection of human rights.”
As peers of Iran’s detained human rights defenders, the National Lawyers Guild urges that
1. The Islamic Republic of Iran to immediately and unconditionally release Nasrin Sotoudeh, all detained human rights defenders, and prisoners of conscience, and recognize that the world will hold the IRI accountable for the well-being of Nasrin Sotoudeh and all prisoners of conscience.
2. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay publicly call on the Islamic Republic to unconditionally release Nasrin Sotoudeh and other human rights defenders.
3. The world’s governments and authorities work with their colleagues and appropriate bodies to ensure Nasrin Sotoudeh’s release and to call on Iran to end its persecution of human rights defenders.
The National Lawyers Guild hopes in the coming days, the appropriate steps will be taken to remedy the dire situation of human rights defenders in Iran.

David Gespass
National Lawyers Guild President

The National Lawyers Guild is a non-profit federation of lawyers, legal workers, and law students. Since 1937, Guild members have been using the law to advance social justice and support progressive social movements. There are chapters throughout the United States, and the National Office is located in New York City.
The NLG is dedicated to the need for basic change in the structure of our political and economic system. We seek to unite the lawyers, law students, legal workers and jailhouse lawyers to function as an effective force in the service of the people, to the end that human rights shall be regarded as more sacred than property interests.
The aim is to bring together all those who recognize the importance of safeguarding and extending the rights of workers, women, farmers, people with disabilities and people of color, upon whom the welfare of the entire nation depends; who seek actively to eliminate racism; who work to maintain and protect our civil rights and liberties in the face of persistent attacks upon them; and who look upon the law as an instrument for the protection of the people, rather than for their repression.

Aung San Suu Kyi released ! Love of people to a true leader !

Burma's military government freed pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Saturday after her latest term of detention expired.
As many as 5,000 supporters gathered outside her residence in Rangoon as she appeared at the gate of her compound.
It took Suu Kyi, 65, about 20 minutes to quiet the boisterous well-wishers. She spoke briefly, thanking her supporters.
"I haven't seen you for a long time," she said, adding they would see each other again Sunday at the headquarters of her political party.
"If we work in unity, we will achieve our goal," she said. "We have a lot of things to do."
She was expected Sunday to meet with her party, diplomats, the public and media, and to attend the funeral of a friend. She was also planning a customary visit to Rangoon's Shwedagon pagoda.

Suu Kyi has spent 15 of the past 21 years in detention without trial. Her latest period of house arrest spanned 7½ years.
The 1991 Nobel Peace Prize laureate and devout Buddhist has promoted a non-violent movement for democracy in Burma, also known as Myanmar, which has been ruled by the military since 1962.
The release from house arrest of one of the world's most prominent political prisoners came a week after an election that was swept by the military's proxy political party and decried by Western observers as a sham designed to perpetuate authoritarian control.

Hear the voice of Afghan women !
Afghan Women fight back against the rule of reactionary law , against talebanism and the idea of keeping the Afghan society and Afghanistan in conservatism.Only Afghan women know what kind of animal the Talebans are? What they have experienced during Taleban regim made them brave today to fight back and stand on alert and let the world know what is going on in Afghanistan and it is our solidarity with them that make them strong.

It is time G20's to understand and support the Afghan , the Iranian and Middle Eastern women and men for their struggle for human rights and democracy in the region.

Taleban are targeting the brave Afghan women like Sitara Achakzay and murdering them and Iranian Government is also targeting human right defenders , journalists and civil right lawyers, students and others and arresting , detaining or murdering them. In Saudi Arabia and other Arab states the women want to be free from the conservative, corrupt rulers . It is time the G20's to focus on Middle East and stop supporting these governments and give the human rights the priority when dealing with them.
