An open letter from The “Mothers of Laleh Park” (Mourning Mothers of Iran) to the United Nations special Rapporteur regarding the investigation of the human rights in Iran

Dear Mr. Ahmad Shaheed;

We feel the warmth of a new hope in our hearts now and that is because after years of constant demands and trying hard by the victims of The Islamic Republic of Iran and their families, the United Nations, the highest international body, has finally appointed you as the special rapporteur to investigate the widespread and systematic human rights abuse by this regime. We feel fortunate that our cry that human right is an international affair and its investigation needs an international body has been heard.
No doubt that even with a quick glance at the vast record, you will find out about the human rights abuses by the Islamic regime and the goal of this letter is not to provide new evidence. By this, we, as the voice of the oppressed mothers, see it as our duty to point out to you the difficulties of the task ahead and declare our readiness to cooperate in gathering evidence and witnesses to the victims of the regime. Because as Maurice Copithorne, the previous United Nations rapporteur has pointed out, you have a difficult task ahead and it is necessary that you be prepared for all the personal and professional attacks and the excuses and lies by the regime ( in an interview with Free Europe, March 26th 2011).
Although the regime of Iran calls the Security Council’s resolutions worthless, its denial to accept any international envoy, shows the importance of such investigations in destroying its international legitimacy.
Unfortunately, at the moment, the United nations lacks any practical ability to force the governments to accept the findings of its human rights rapporteurs, but it is clear that the isolation of those regimes with a widespread disregard for human rights, can only be achieved by such revelations and we hope to reach this with the help of you and other consciences people of the world.
Obviously, the Islamic Republic would deny the existence of political prisoners, would hide the torture chambers from you and in best scenario, if they allow you to visit the prisoners, they put up a show to gratify themselves, as was the case with Galindo Pohl’s visit. You probably will never see the cells at an abandoned chicken ranch which is currently being used as a women prison and because of the lack of any sanitation facility, the prisoners have to relieve themselves by the side of their beds (2). You will probably not see the moment when the prison’s health workers, instead of caring for, subject an already weak prisoner on hunger strike and with a heart problem, to sever beatings that results in his death (3). You will not witness the selling of the prisoners for sexual abuses and would not be presented with an accurate statistics about the spread of aids and hepatitis as a result of widespread drug addictions and rapes. They will not show you the prisons with populations four times over the capacity and hide the mixing of the physically dangerous prisoners with the political dissidents and even the teenagers.
The rulers will not tell you that even holding the pictures of the killed children by their mothers would result in intimidations, interrogations and imprisonment of their other children. They will hide from you the savage attacks to the peaceful silent marches or funerals and or the arrest of the participants.
They will certainly not allow you inside the Khavaran cemetery (5) and will not invite you to see the empty seats of the college students killed at the university demonstrations.
They will not show you the public stoning, hangings and retributions (punishment according to religious law, Ghesas). You will never see the torture chambers where the political prisoners are forced to make false confessions against themselves. Confessions that they know would result in their execution, but they do them willingly to put an end to the physical and psychological tortures that they are subjected to.
But all this is only a small fraction of the story of the sufferings endured by the victims. It is hard to reach a deep understanding, unless there is a face to face meeting with them or their survivals under a safe condition.
Dear Mr. Ahmad Shaheed;
We don’t intend to repeat the statistics here; the horrible statistics of the executions, tortures, political-consciences prisoners, disappeared, deprived from education, dispelled, the victims of chain assassinations and ethnic, religious and sexual minorities. It is not difficult to find these statistics. What we expect from you as a decent person who is trying to restore human rights, despite the difficulties that would be created by the Islamic Republic, is to use all your powers and meet and speak with the victims of these crimes and their families. Because you don’t find the everlasting pain of the victims of sexual assault like Azar Kanaan (6) in the hands of their torturers and the pain that mothers of those innocents killed, like Sohrab, Neda and Farzad (7) have to live with day and night and the pain of years of wondering of those families kept in the dark, like the mother of Saied Zeynali (8) and what went on with the families of those who were executed in the decade of 1980 like Behkish, in any statistics. These statistics will not inform you that as we are writing to you, there is the news of the arrest of Mansoureh Behkish, one of our companions, who has lost six close relatives to these executions. She is currently in Evin Prison, because she wrote:
“I hate myself when I’m silent and do not fight for my civic rights and let the rulers who abuse human rights, take them away from me. I have a right to live, my child has a right to live. My mother, father, husband, sister, brother, neighbor and friend has the right to a free and just life without discrimination and I have the right to defend the rights of all those whom I love and nobody can take this right away from me.”
Dear Mr. Shaheed;
You certainly are aware of the long effort for the United Nations, this highest international body, to appoint a special human rights rapporteur. The high hopes for this appointment is evident from the letters from the Noble Peace Prize winner and defense lawyer, Shirin Ebadi, organizations such as International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, International Federation of Human Rights Societies, The Society to Defend Human Rights in Iran and The Reporters Without Borders to the letters from the political prisoners leaked outside the walls with unimaginable difficulties and risks. These letters all ask for an immediate investigation of the horrible conditions of the human rights in Iran.
Now, we the suffered but decidedly firm mothers are also demanding from you to echo our cries to the world. By this letter, we express that by your investigations and gathering of the information that you will submit to the United Nations, you create a ground to increase the international pressures on Iran to uphold its legal commitments to the International Human Rights Charter.
The government of Iran as a member of the United Nations and international community, has to have regard for this international treaty or stay in international isolation.
In this order, we ask you to do your best effort to make it possible to observe and investigate the conditions of the prisons in Iran closely and meet and speak to the political prisoners while insuring their security and safety. Meet with the family members of those disappeared or killed by the regime and publish their testimonies. And finally, try to identify those state agents who ordered and carried out the rapes and the executions of the political prisoners and dissidents and the shooting of the protesters. This may prepare the way to bring them to justice in a court of law, in a near or not so near future.
It is our outmost desire that we, the suffering mothers, help you in this grave task.
We hope to see a day that all mothers witness their children grow up and live in a peaceful, just and equal society.

1 - The Mothers of Laleh Park (Mourning Mothers) which was born out of the gatherings of the mothers of those killed during the May of 2009 protests against the results of the presidential election in various parks, hand in hand with all the mothers of the victims of dictatorial regimes, will never forgo the blood of their children and demand trial and punishment of those who ordered and carried out the street shootings, individual and mass execution of the political prisoners, ethnic and religious killings, illegal arrests, tortures, rapes and terrors and the nightly raids and creating mayhem at the student’s dormitories, especially after the 1980’s. The mothers of Laleh Park demand the unconditional release of all the political and consciences prisoners and abolishment of capital punishment. They believe capital punishment is a form of organized assassination and are against any assassination including stoning and the law of retribution. As past and present victims of violence and discrimination against women, they support any non-violent and justice seeking effort. Considering the suppressions inside the country, supporters of The Mothers of Laleh Park in other parts of the world, consider this their duty to bring their voice to the rest of the world.

Islamic Republic continue its disastrous policy towards Iran and Iranian women !

Pictures from Iranian women soccer team in 1970's and at present ! Islamic Republic's policy towards Iranian women is discrimination against women and violation of human rights. ( Forcing the women what to wear is a rights violation).

Mon Jun 06 03:51pm EDT

The Iranian women's soccer team was in tears after being forced to forfeit a 2012 London Olympics qualifying match this past weekend because it showed up to play in hijabs. FIFA banned the Islamic head scarf in 2007, saying that it could cause choking injuries -- the same reason it gave for recently banning snoods (neck warmers). FIFA also has strict rules against any religious statements in team uniforms.
Since Iran refused to comply with these rules and didn't use the specially designed caps that its 2010 Youth Olympics team wore, Friday's match was abandoned by officials and a 3-0 win was awarded to Jordan as a result. The Football Federation of Iran said it will complain to FIFA about the ruling, but FIFA says assurances were made beforehand so that this situation would've been avoided. From the AP:

For Immediate Release
Iran: Stop Undermining Women’s Rights
On International Women’s Rights Day, Iranian Activists to Open Campaign for Equality(Beirut, March 7, 2010) – Iran should stop infringing on women’s rights and take immediate steps to meet Iranian women’s demands for full equality, Human Rights Watch said today. Iranian women’s rights activists have issued a call for freedom and gender equality in Iran in connection with International Women’s Rights Day on March 8.Their campaign, Call for Solidarity: Freedom and Gender Equality in Iran, seeks an end to state-led violence and other forms of repression directed against both men and women. On January 10, 2010, for example, more than 30 women were beaten at a weekly vigil in Tehran. The women were seeking news of their sons and daughters who had been detained during the protests following the June 2009 presidential elections. This campaign calls on the authorities to immediately release all political detainees, including many women’s rights activists.“This initiative of Iranian women’s rights activists is crucial to the overall struggle for democracy in Iran,” said Nadya Khalife, women’s rights researcher for the Middle East and North Africa at Human Rights Watch. “It is also a tribute to the strength of women, who continue to demand their rights and support fellow citizens in the toughest of times.”For more than 30 years, the women’s rights movement has been at the forefront in the struggle for human rights and gender equality in Iran, Human Rights Watch said. Iranian women have been subjected to a range of discriminatory laws and practices, often under the guise of enforcing Islamic law.As an example, the Legal and Judicial Commission of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of the Parliament is pressing for passage of a Family Support Bill, including an amendment that would legalize polygamy. Under the proposed measure, a husband could take a new wife if his wife is diagnosed with a terminal illness, is away from home for six months, or even if she is imprisoned for a bounced check.“Iranian women have bravely sought over and over to end gender-based discrimination, only to be met with threats, arrests, and imprisonment of activists,” Khalife said. “Human Rights Watch calls on the Iranian government to allow women’s rights groups to operate freely, without harassment, or worse.”In February, Human Rights Watch released a report, "The Islamic Republic at 31: Post-Election Abuses Show Serious Human Rights Crisis,” which documents widespread human rights violations including extra-judicial killings, rape and torture in detention, and extensive violations of the right to freedom of assembly and expression since the disputed presidential election June 12.

For Immediate Release
Iran: Free ‘Mourning Mothers’ Supporters
At Least Six Recently Detained Without Charge(New York, March 6, 2010) – The Iranian Judiciary should immediately release six women arrested in January and early February 2010, apparently in connection with their peaceful activities on behalf of the Mourning Mothers, Human Rights Watch said today.Mourning Mothers is a civil society group established in June 2009 by mothers whose children lost their lives in state-sanctioned violence following Iran’s disputed June 12 election. In recent months many Iranians have expressed support for the group.“Supporters of the Mourning Mothers, like other Iranian civil society activists, are apparently being locked up for their public show of solidarity on behalf of the group,” said Joe Stork, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. “These women have now spent weeks in detention without being allowed to see their families or having access to their lawyers.”In the latest arrests, Intelligence Ministry agents arrested five supporters of the group in their homes during the evening or early morning hours of February 6 and 8. Those detained are Omolbanin Ebrahimi, Elham Ahsani, Jila Karamzadeh-Makvandi, Fatemeh Rastegari, and Leila Seifollahi.A sixth supporter, Farzaneh Zeinali, was among 32 Mourning Mothers supporters arrested on January 9, when they attempted to gather in Laleh Park, where the group held its peaceful vigils. Authorities gradually released 31 of them over the following few days, but Zeinali remains in detention nearly two months later.It is not clear whether authorities have informed the women of the reasons for their arrest, and they have not charged any of the detainees with any offense, Human Rights Watch said.Ahsani’s mother told Human Rights Watch that six intelligence agents entered the family home on February 8, conducted a search and confiscated several items that belonged to her daughter. They then told Ahsani to come with them. When Ahsani’s mother asked why, the arresting officers said that they had “questions for her regarding events that took place after the elections.” They also said they were taking her to Evin Prison.Her mother said that Ahsani was especially active with a registered civil society organization that provides social services to disadvantaged mothers and their children in Tehran. She had also attended one or two gatherings organized by the Mourning Mothers. The family later learned that it was Ahsani’s participation in those gatherings that led to her arrest.Another family member of a detained Mourning Mothers supporter told Human Rights Watch that Intelligence Ministry agents entered their home with a general search warrant, allowing the agents to inspect the premises of anyone suspected of being involved in unlawful activities during the past several months. They searched the home and confiscated personal items, including a computer, CDs, and notebooks. The agents refused to provide any information about why the woman was being detained, only saying that she would be transferred to Evin Prison.A statement released by the Mourning Mothers on February 21 indicates that the six supporters are in Section 209 of Evin Prison, which is administered by the Intelligence Ministry. The families of these women gather in front of Evin Prison every night from about 8 to 11 p.m., along with many other families whose loved ones have been imprisoned in Evin during the past eight months.Several of the families of the six arrested women were able to contact their loved ones by phone. One family member told Human Rights Watch that the phone conversations are very short and strictly monitored by guards. “She only said, ‘I am well, don’t be worried,’” this person said. “The conversation usually takes 1 to 2 minutes … sometimes I ask her questions, and she simply answers yes or no.”Families are often forced to go back and forth between Evin Prison and Revolutionary Court branch offices in search of any information regarding their loved ones. One family member indicated that prison authorities have prevented lawyers hired by the families from visiting the women for the purpose of signing retainer letters – a right granted to all detainees under Iranian law.Article 9 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), to which Iran is a party, prohibits arbitrary detention. Article 9 also states that anyone arrested should be informed, at the time of their arrest, of the reasons for their detention, should be “promptly” informed of any criminal charges, and should be “brought promptly” before a judge to review their detention. The Covenant also requires Iran to respect the right to freedom of association with others, and to peaceful assembly.For more Human Rights Watch reporting on Iran, please visit:

Islamic Republic in Iran by banning all peaceful means of expressing critical views and banning speaking on human rights, is leaving the women who are half of Iranian population to no other choice than pouring into the street one day and like a tsunami revolt against Islam & Islamic republic !

The celebration for International women's Day in Iran was banned by Islamic Republic.

The Government and security organizations didn't issue the permission for the organizers of this gathering.Yesterday Tehran City hall supported the government and cancelled the permission for the gathering on March eight the International Women's Day .The lawyers association and the Centre for Human Rights Defenders were helping the women to celeberate this event.

Mr. Mohammad Mostafaei the lawyer said: Two weeks ago we got a place for holding this event and applied for permission and received the permission , yesterday when we attended to the location found a note on the window, which was reading; this programe is cancelled because of the lack of permission. We attended to the office of the place and they have told us , for not having permission from governors office the event is cancelled. This lawyer said: "for holding an event, we usually take permission from city hall and not governor's office."

Since there was no place to hold the event and since wherever the women went , they were followed by the security agents , even coffee shops and parking lot of artists house ,as a result those women attended were gradually dispersed.

July 23, 1953 , in the city of “Fuman”

You were a teacher one day and you were teaching in high school , but you were expelled from Ministry of Education , is this right?

Yes , it is correct, i was cleared from Ministry of Education in 1980

What subjects were you teaching?
Different subjects, from mathematics to history and physical education

Where were you teaching? Was it in your birth place or....?
For a while in the city of Fuman, my home town and also for sometimes in district number 10- Ministry of Education in Tehran and another time i taught in “Hadaf” girl high school , this was when madam Melina Malkumian was the owner, at the time i was teaching sociology.

What did you study while in university?
I have received Bachelor of Science in history from Tehran University. I could because of my grade enroll in medicine. Because at that time my IQ and talent grade was 99.2% and I was top student in class. But because i have no tolerance looking at dead bodies and basically I'm soft hearted , I decided not to get in medical studies.

What year did you finished your study from university?
I think it was 1974. But later i continued my education and in 1997 i finished my master in industrial management (production).

How many brother and sister do you have?
We were seven sisters and three brothers. But now we are four sisters and one brother. The rest have past away and I’m the youngest in the family, for this reason my sisters and brother all are in higher age and are very old.

Since when you become sensitive with women’s issues?

The women issues aren’t separate from Iranian people’s issues, but in laws, women are really being discriminated. Since I was a child and teen by reading the works of “ John Steinbeck” I become familiar with dictions such as inequality , poverty and discrimination and that’s why always poverty , injustice and discrimination was very important and sensitive issues for me. Since childhood the existence of inequality was bothering me and it was very bitter. While I was getting older I could see women like men are working but because of the existence of discrimination laws over our society, women were suffering more from inequality and it was effecting on their lives.

………….

Did you ever think that there might be clashes in “ Hafte Tir “ square gathering and you may be arrested?
See, It wasn’t problem for me, because it was all about the rights of women and I had six years imprisonment in the past.

Alieh , on what issues in your case file do you protest?

I remember in investigation process, they have inserted two blue color placards in my court file and they were saying they took those placards from me, while I never had any placards , that means, I participated in that gathering without placards. In the court later on, I saw those placards weren’t blue and instead there was the white one. I announce here that, I was protesting to legal discriminations (which was in fact written on those placards), that’s why I joined the gathering, but specifically these placards that they have inserted in my case file, wasn’t in my hand and my protest is that, according to law , they shouldn’t add or remove anything in my file, and this in my opinion is the violation of law. At the same time , I reject any charges against me, because according to article 27 of constitution, that gathering and every gathering which dealt with the rights of women, teachers and workers , I have every right to participate, because , first of all I’m woman, and then I was a teacher and at a time representative of teachers and also in a period I worked in Mazda company. Therefore, I’m a woman, a teacher and a worker. So, according to law I can participate in those gathering for my union rights and I don’t find it violating the law .
