Internet Enemies
Domain name : .ir Population : 66 429 284 Internet-users : 32 200 000 Average charge for one hour’s connection at a cybercafé : 0,95 US$ Average monthly salary : 407 US$ Number of imprisoned netizens : 13
Iran, one of cyber-censorship’s record-holding countries, has stepped up its crackdown and online surveillance since the protests over the disputed presidential reelection of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on June 12, 2009. The regime is demonizing the new media, which it is accusing of serving foreign interest. While a dozen netizens are serving out their terms in Evin Prison, bold Internet users are continuing to mobilize.
A smooth-running filtering system
Censorship is a core part of Iran’s state apparatus. Internet surveillance has been centralized, thereby facilitating implementation of censorship. Internet service providers rent bandwidth to the Telecommunication Company of Iran (TCI), controlled by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (RGC). ICT is responsible for ordering the blocking of websites, which ensures a consistent censorship policy using filtering software developed in Iran. Blocking criteria are defined by the Committee in Charge of Determining Unauthorized Websites (CCDUW). The latter is comprised of members from several government branches and the judicial wing: the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, the Ministry of National Security and Teheran’s Public Prosecutor.
Censorship is done by combining URL blocking with keyword filtering, as deemed necessary according to changing current events. Among the keywords that have been blocked are the words “woman” in Farsi, “torture,” and “rape,” since August 2009, when one of the opposition leaders, Mehdi Karoubi, condemned the harsh treatment inflicted on incarcerated demonstrators in Kahrizak Prison.
The connection speed for individuals in Iran is slow and limited to 128 kb/s. By order of the Ministry of Communications, households and cybercafés are prohibited from accessing broadband. This technical obstacle limits Internet users’ ability to upload and download photos and videos. Speeds can be even slower in periods of social unrest.
The authorities rely on the Iran Press Law, Penal Code and the Cyber Crime Act of 2009 to prosecute Internet users. Article 18 of the latter provides for a prison term of up to two years and a fine for anyone found guilty of “disseminating false information likely to agitate public opinion.“
Site blocking
Iran applies one of the world’s strictest filtering policies, which have been tightened even more since June 2009. To date, authorities claim to have blocked hundreds of thousands of sites. One thing is certain: thousands of websites and millions of associated pages are now inaccessible in Iran.

Mehdi Karubi : How can without any standard execute people and be indifferent towards its aftermath ?
Mr. Mehdi Karubi one of the candidate of the last June 12 presidential election in Iran and the past speaker of the parliament had a meeting with a student political prisoner and in that meeting he told reporters about the recent execution of five political prisoners on Sunday and here is his comment:
"It is natural we are touched by their execution and death and we are basically against these type of conducts. Their execution happened while no one knows about how and why they were executed and no one was certain of their crime because of the close court and not following the legal procedure and the law. The words from lawyer of those executed and that they weren't informed about the execution is very disappointing and this shows that the justice is rare and this present way has no proportion with the judiciary and religious standards. How can without any standard execute people and be indifferent towards its aftermath ? Is the life of people that much cheap that it can be taken easily and with less legal obsession and without general information to be taken away ?"

EI is encouraging its affiliates to hold vigils to mark the sad news of the death of Farzad.
[2010-05-10]
Education International is deeply troubled to hear reports that Iranian teacher trade unionist Farzad Kamangar was among five people who were summarily executed in secret on 9 May.
Farzad Kamangar, a 35-year-old member of the Teachers’ Union of Kurdistan, was accused of "endangering national security" and "enmity against God". He had lived with the threat of the death penalty since February 2008, when it was imposed upon him after a sham trial that lasted less than five minutes.
Although the Iranian authorities had accepted Farzad’s appeal, the case stalled when it should have been sent to the Supreme Court for review. After further delays, Farzad’s lawyer was told that his file had been lost. Despite the evident lack of independent inquiry into the allegations and the absence of a fair judicial process, Farzad has still been reportedly executed.
EI General Secretary, Fred van Leeuwen, said: “We are all deeply shocked and saddened to hear that Farzad has been executed. His case was particularly troubling to our 30 million members because of the opaque and secretive manner in which his trial was conducted, the lack of basic rights he had access to whilst in prison, and the fact that neither his family or legal representatives were informed of his execution. This is a terrible day for teachers, union activists and human rights. EI expresses our solidarity with Farzad’s family, colleagues and students.”
He added: “EI recognises the rights and responsibilities of all governments to bring to justice those suspected of criminal offences but this must be in line with international and national standards of fair trial. EI is also unequivocal that the Iranian government must ensure respect for all trade union and human rights.”
The trade union and human rights community had campaigned against the death penalty and prosecution of Farzad. EI and its affiliates have been particularly vocal and lobbied the ILO Committee on Freedom of Association, which subsequently ‘urge[d] the Government [of Iran] to immediately stay the execution of Farzad Kamangar’s death sentence, annul his conviction and secure his release from detention.’
Call for action:
UN must send a delegate to Iran immediately to monitor the situation in prisons and to stop the execution of political prisoners !
People in the Islamic states must put pressure on their governments to send strong protest letters to the coup d'etat government of Ahmadinejad and condemn the killing of their innocent moslem brothers in Iran.
Once again IRAN WATCH CANADA calls the followers of Hamas in Palestine, Hizbullah of Lebanon and the follower of Moqtada Al sadr in Iraq to protest against the killing of their innocent moslem brothers.
The regime of Khamenei and Ahmadinejad are destablizing the situation of our region and this concern all of us and we cant keep quiet.
One news indicate that, more than 17 political prisoners are on death row and regime is planning to carry out their sentences. Regime is taking revenge from the political prisoners beacuse of the last 11 months of unrest in Iran. Regime is also creating an atmospher of fear through out the country , reminding the people if they protest in the coming anniversary of the presidential election rigging , they would end up with the same situation.
Despite of willingness by public prosecutors office and MP's to transfer the bodies of these five to their families, but the ministry of information and the office of the ministry in Kurdistan won't give the bodies to the families.
In another news, this morning the mother and sister of Shirin Alamhouli the only woman who was executed on sunday were arrested at their home in the city of "Mako".This is while they did not know anything about the execution.
The International Teachers Federation in a strong statement protested the execution of Farzad Kamangar the Iranian teacher.

Hollywood film-makers urge Iran to release Jafar Panahi
Hollywood film-makers including Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese have called on the Iranian government to release director Jafar Panahi.
A petition also signed by Robert De Niro, Robert Redford and Francis Ford Coppola, denounced the arrest of Panahi on 1 March.
"We... stand in solidarity with a fellow film-maker", the petition read.
Panahi, known for his social realism, has made several films critical of Iran's regime.
The group of film-makers and actors "strongly urge the Iranian government to release Mr Panahi immediately", the petition continued.
Plain clothes police broke into Panahi's family home and arrested him, his wife and daughter and 15 other guests, his son Panah told reporters last month.
"The arrest of Jafar Panahi is not because he is an artist or for political reason," prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi told the Isna news agency.
"He is accused of some crimes and was arrested with another person following an order by a judge."
Last year a travel ban was imposed on Panahi by the authorities after he appeared wearing green - the colour of opposition supporters - at the Montreal film festival.
He was also briefly arrested after attending a memorial to student Neda Agha Soltan, killed at an opposition rally last June.
Violent protest
Panahi is a past winner of the Venice Film Festival's Golden Lion award.
His most recent film is Offside, which won the 2006 Berlin Film Festival's Silver Bear award.
It tells the story of a group of female football fans who try to sneak into Iran's World Cup qualifying match against Bahrain but are arrested.
In Iran, women are banned from attending men's sporting events.
At least 30 protesters have been killed in clashes since last year's disputed elections, although the opposition says more than 70 have died. Thousands have been detained and some 200 activists remain behind bars.
At least nine have been sentenced to death, and two have been executed already.
Some of those arrested include former ministers and the sister of Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi.

PART THREE
Shirin Ebadi
For several months now, pretty much all the talk about Iran has revolved around that country's alleged nuclear ambitions. It's easy to understand why. But for Shirin Ebadi, it's also a bit frustrating. She is an Iranian lawyer and human rights activist. She won the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize for her work promoting democracy and human rights in Iran.
The Iranian Government responded by confiscating her Nobel Prize medal, banning her autobiography, freezing her bank accounts and issuing not-so-veiled threats. As her country prepared to go to the polls this summer, Doctor Ebadi concluded it was no longer safe for her to stay. So she went into exile in the United Kingdom.
But Shirin Ebadi's work has continued and last week, there was a victory. Iran, which had been lobbying for a seat on the United Nations' Human Rights Council, withdrew its bid. This week, Shirin Ebadi was in Canada on a speaking tour and she came into our Ottawa studio. We aired our conversation with translation.
